It’s important that PetSmart gives back to the communities we’re in. That’s why we’re thrilled to distribute PetSmart Charities grants nationwide to hard-working nonprofit organizations that help pets and people.
Scott Bellmeyer, District Lead of PetSmart in Central Illinois and Kentucky, selected the Dubuque Regional Humane Society to receive a PetSmart Charities grant.
“We selected the Dubuque Regional Humane Society because of all the great work they do in the community, and for the fact that over this past year, they have gone from a kill shelter to a no-kill shelter,” says Bellmeyer.
That’s a huge transition for a shelter. Giving animals the time they need to recover and find loving homes requires additional money and resources, which can be hard to come by.
“They are an incredible partner to us, and I appreciate all their efforts, hard work and dedication they provide for us and the Dubuque community,” says Bellmeyer.
Carrying out Life-Saving Work
Each year, the Dubuque Regional Humane Society helps more than 2,500 pets that have been abandoned, lost, surrendered by owners or rescued from neglect.
According to Laura Merrick, president and CEO of the organization, the humane society is committed to improving the lives of the animals in their care.
“The mission of the Dubuque Regional Humane Society is to protect and promote the well-being of all animals by fostering respect for their inherent dignity,” says Merrick.
As a no-kill shelter, the organization faces hefty medical bills and expenses. The grant from PetSmart Charities provides them with much-needed funding.
“The PetSmart Charities grant will be used to further advance the mission of the DRHS and our life-saving work,” says Merrick. “This translates into enriching over 2,200 families with a new companion animal and reuniting more than 200 lost pets with the people who love them. We’ve achieved a save rate of over 99% so far this year.”
With the support of donors like PetSmart, the Dubuque Regional Humane Society can continue to do great work in the community, saving pets and putting their well-being first.
